Pickering unveiled its Orange Crosswalk to remember the children of residential school and their families Saturday morning.

Developed through a collaborative effort between the City and the Indigenous Relationship Building Circle (IRBC), the commemorative crosswalk stands to honour the lost children, survivors, their families, and communities affected by the residential school system.

“Today, we came together as a community,” Mayor Dave Ryan said at the ceremony. “This is more than a crosswalk – this is a commitment to reconciliation and a call to action. It is a commitment to a journey of learning. “

Indigenous residents painted seven feathers on the crosswalk to reflect the Seven Grandfather Teachings (Love, Respect, Bravery, Honesty, Wisdom, Humility, and Truth).

The Orange Crosswalk is located at Valley Farm Road and The Esplanade North in the heart of Pickering’s city centre.
