Pickering wants to make parking at its popular waterfront easier this summer with a series of proposed changes, including cutting in half the hourly parking rates.

The issue comes before the City’s Executive Committee Monday evening with cutting the waterfront permit parking hourly rate from $5 to $2.50 per hour (Monday to Friday, 9-5) at the top of the list. Staff is also proposing that two hour free parking be allowed within the waterfront permit parking area – except for Beachpoint Promenade, Front Street and the municipally operated waterfront parking lots – in addition to the two hour free parking already allowed in the Liverpool Road lay-by spaces.

The report is also proposing that staff implement a free digital guest parking pass system for residents parking in the waterfront permit parking area and that new free resident waterfront parking permits be valid for a period of two years. Non-resident seniors will also be able to buy a waterfront parking permit for $80 under the plan and resident seniors who don’t own or operate a vehicle be given a free physical parking pass to allow them to be driven to the waterfront without incurring parking costs.

The City will also spend $15,000 to purchase and install a WiFi hub in each of the three municipally operated waterfront parking lots to enable cellphone users without data plans to use the HotSpot parking app and will also provide $17,000 to install additional signage and host a public engagement and communication campaign to implement the changes.
