The Turtle and the Coyote, The Little Rescue and The Tiger of the Underworld are the winning tales from Pickering’s second annual Tails of Hope Short Story Contest, delivered in partnership with the Pickering Public Library and HiFive Kids Dental & Braces.

Three top winners were selected from animal-related story entries submitted by children ages 5 to 12 years old:

  • The Turtle and the Coyote by Isabella
  • The Little Rescue by Katelyn
  • The Tiger of the Underworld by Erum

Winners received a professionally published copy of their story. Four large compilation books were created to highlight the top 17 entries, and are available for viewing at Pickering Central Library, Pickering Animal Shelter, and HiFive Kids Dental & Braces.

“We encourage the community to stop into one of the locations to read the stories written by these talented young authors,” said Lindsey Narraway, Supervisor, Animal Services. “Each story delivers important messaging – Isabella’s story reminds us of the importance of slowing down for wildlife and to not judge a book by its cover, Katelyn’s story shows us how to have compassion for all living beings, and Erum’s story reminds us how our imaginations can often create the best stories.”

To celebrate, all young authors were invited to a special Book Celebration Party, where they were presented with their published book, personalized certificates, and experienced a virtual tour of the Animal Shelter.
