The City of Pickering has joined the chorus of other Ontario municipalities in demanding the provincial government outlaw modified exhaust systems, especially those exceeding 80 decibels.

Councillor Maurice Brenner said the topic of noisy mufflers comes up often in discussions with residents, but the City has no authority to do anything about it, adding he was happy Mayor Dave Ryan had raised the subject with local MPP Peter Bethlenfalvy, who also serves as Ontario’s Finance Minister.

“I don’t think there’s much more to say on this,” Ryan noted. “The mufflers are already making the noise.”

The Town of Ajax, City of Oshawa and the Region of Durham – along with several other Ontario municipalities – have already called for a ban on modified exhaust systems.

Queen’s Park had passed a motion in 2018 making it illegal to tamper with vehicle exhaust systems or sell tampering devices but the bill stalled and was never made law.
