A school has been demolished in Mississauga to make way for a replacement.

Ellengale Public School, which was located on Ellengale Drive, near Erindale Station Road and Central Parkway West, was taken down in recent weeks.

The Peel District School Board confirmed to INsauga.com that demolition took place from early April until early this month.

It’s part of a project to build a replacement school at the same location.

“In April 2022, the Peel District School Board received capital funding approval from the Ministry of Education to demolish the existing Ellengale Public School and build a new replacement school on the same site,” PDSB spokesperson Mora Carruthers said.

She said the ministry provided the PDSB with around $40.8 million to cover the cost of demolition and construction of the new building.

“The new Ellengale Public School will be an 882 pupil place school serving students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8,” Carruthers said.

“The school will also feature a four-room child care centre that can accommodate 73 children (infants, toddlers and preschool).”

With the project ongoing, students have been temporarily relocated to the old Ashgrove Public School, which is on Thorncrest Drive in Mississauga’s west end, near Winston Churchill Boulevard and Burnhamthorpe Road.

It’s expected that the new Ellengale Public School will be finished by January 2027, Carruthers said.
