Mississauga, Toronto and other GTA residents in need of complex care and rehabilitation services will soon be able to access a brand new nine-story medical facility.

On Oct. 4, Trillium Health Partners (THP) announced that they, along with Infrastructure Ontario (IO), have issued a request for proposals to build and finance the Gilgan Family Queensway Health Centre. The new health centre, which will be located just east of Mississauga, is part of THP’s planned expansion of its west Toronto Queensway Health Centre.

The project, part of Trillium HealthWorks, will provide patients with a dedicated centre for complex care and rehabilitation services. Once complete, the nine-story facility will span 600,000 sq. ft. and boast space for over 350 beds.

According to THP, the Centre will help alleviate pressure on the organization’s existing hospitals by adding additional capacity for specialized care. THP says the new facility will feature private rooms and will come equipped with a new parking structure that’s currently under construction.

In a news release, THP said that construction company EllisDon Corporation has been invited to bid on the project following a request for qualifications process that began in October 2021.

“This milestone marks great progress in the Trillium HealthWorks infrastructure plan,” Karli Farrow, President and CEO, Trillium Health Partners, said in a statement.

“It comes on the heels of receiving the City of Toronto’s continued support of zoning and permit approvals to ensure the timely delivery of urgently needed health infrastructure for the communities we serve. We have made great progress on this project, including the new parking structure under construction, and look forward to continuing our work together to build better health care for a healthier community.”

THP said that over the next 20 years, the health organization–which also operates Mississauga Hospital and Credit Valley Hospital–will experience more demand for its services than any other hospital in Ontario.

THP’s Toronto hospital isn’t the only site slated for expansion.

Late last year, the province announced that THP’s existing Mississauga Hospital will be completely rebuilt. The new Mississauga Hospital is expected to be nearly three times the size of the current healthcare facility.

When completed, the new healthcare centre is expected to be among the largest–if not the largest–hospitals in Canada, according to the Ontario government.

The new hospital structure will boast about 2.8 million sq. ft. of space and 23 cutting-edge operating rooms, up from the 14 older ORs currently in use.

Additionally, the emergency department will be one of the largest in Ontario and some 350 new beds will be added to bring the total to more than 950. More than 80 per cent of the beds will be in private rooms.

Once the new hospital is complete, the existing structure will be demolished.

The Queensway Health Centre is expected to open and begin serving patients in 2024.
