Perogies, mushrooms, meats, waffle maker, and bed frames recalled from Ontario stores this week

Residents in Mississauga and Brampton are being advised by Health Canada to check their homes for certain brands of food, sports equipment, and household items where some contain allergens and bacteria while others can cause injuries related to falling hazards.


Nina’s Pierogies brand

Nina's Pierogies - Vegan Cheddar Pierogies - 450g - Front

The vegan cheddar perogies may contain milk which was not declared on the label.

Risk: Poses health risks to those who are allergic or sensitive. In serious cases the reaction from consumption, could be life-threating.

What you should do: Throw out the product or return to the location where it was purchased.

As of May 21 2023, there has been one reported reaction associated with the consumption of the product.


PowerXL Stuffed Wafflizer Waffle Maker

PowerXL 5 inch (12.7 cm) Stuffed Wafflizer Waffle Maker

The affected waffle maker is 5 inches (12.7 cm) with the model number ESWM02 which can be found on a label attached to the power cord.

The products were sold in 3 colours which include black, cinnamon, and slate.

The PowerXL logo, and green and red indicator lights are located on the front of the waffle maker.

The issue of concern is that hot pieces of the waffle or stuffing can be expelled from the waffle maker during use or upon opening the product.

Risk: Potential burn hazard.

What you should do: Immediately stop using the item and contact Empower Brands to receive a free latch adapter part as well as written instructions on how to complete the repair.

As of May 17, 2023, the company has received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada. However, in the United States, the company has received 44 reports of incidents including 34 burn injuries with three consumers seeking medical attention.


Shimano PRO Vibe Bicycle Stem

Affected models

The recalled item can be identified by its black coloured alloy with a prominent silver “V” branding on the faceplate of the stem. The stem has forward facing mounting bolts.

Models with bolt heads at the front of the faceplate are not included in the recall.

The stems may form cracks and break over time causing the rider to lose control and fall.

Risk: Potential fall injury.

What you should do: Discontinue using bicycles with PRO Vibe alloy handlebar stems and it to an authorized retailer to determine if the stem is subject to the recall.

As of April 21, 2023, the company has received no reports of incidents in Canada, and no reports of injuries.


Golden Mushroom brand Enoki

Golden Mushroom - Enoki Mushroom - 200 g - front

The mushrooms weigh approximately 200 grams with the UPC 8 809201 000039 are being recalled from the marketplace.

The product is contaminated with the microbial Listeria. It may not look or smell spoiled but can make you sick if consumed.

Risk: Health risks including vomiting, nausea, fever, neck stiffness, and severe headaches. Those who are elderly, pregnant, or have weak immune systems are at risk the most.

What you should do: Check to see if you have the recalled product and throw it out. If you have fallen sick after consuming the product, contact your healthcare provider immediately.


SmartBase® Euro Slats Metal Platform Bed Frames

Recalled SmartBase Euro Slats Metal Platform Bedframe - Twin

The twin size metal mattress platform bed frames are the affected products.

The bed frames have a black metal frame and measure 14 inches high, with the ASIN number B00M169YVC.

The model code is OLB-MESB-T and can be found on purchase invoice or box; the last letter in each model code indicates the size.

The recall units were sold online at Amazon.ca between September 20th, 2022 and December 6, 2022.

The assembly kit that came with the bedframe did not include reinforcing brackets for installation on the corners of the frame. This could lead to the frame collapsing.

Risk: Potentially cause an injury hazard.

What you should do: It is advised to stop using the recalled metal bed frames and contact Zinus to obtain a free repair kit.

As of May 11th, 2023, the company has identified no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada.


San Daniele brand and Mastro brand Mortadella

San Daniele<sup>®</sup> Mortadella Classica

The luncheon meat is being recalled due to undeclared pistachio.

The following batches from the brands and expirations dates are affected by the recall:

  • MastroMortadella ( Best Before July 27 2023 )
  • San Daniele Mortadella ( Best Before July 27 2023 and Aug 2 2023 )

Risk: Poses health risks to those with tree nut allergy.

What you should do: Stop consuming if you have any allergies to pistachios and throw the product out.
