The Hamilton Fire Department swifty responded to alarms at Saltfleet Secondary School shortly after 01:17 p.m., today (June 5). The urgency stemmed from reports that someone had discharged pepper spray within the premises.

Upon arrival, fire fighters met with the school’s staff who confirmed the incident. Recognizing the potential health risks associated with pepper spray exposure, the staff acted swiftly to ensure the safety of students and personnel by evacuating the building.

Fire crews then proceeded to assess the situation and evaluate the air quality within the school. As the building had natural ventilation systems in place, the process of clearing the area of irritants was expedited. This allowed for the safe return of the occupants once the air quality had reached acceptable levels.

Authorities said that the exact circumstances surrounding the pepper spray discharge remains unknown.
