A Toronto subway station just got a new name and many people are expressing their thoughts.

The Toronto Transit Commission announced changes happening at Dundas Station this week.

“Over the next few weeks, you’ll start to see our signs change from Dundas to TMU,” the TTC wrote on its website. “Please be patient with our team as we make this change, as there are many signs to update at the station and across our system.”

The new name is funded by TMU (Toronto Metropolitan University, formerly Ryerson).

City of Toronto councillors approved the change in December 2023 along with several other name changes. The change is in partnership with TMU and has “no net impact on the City of Toronto’s or the Toronto Transit Commission’s budget,” city council documents state.

The TTC board approved the name change in May.

The name change came along with the renaming of Yonge-Dundas Square to Sankofa Square. Council embarked on renaming policies due to the association with Henry Dundas, a Scottish politician whose policies delayed the abolition of slavery.

As the new TMU signs went up in the station this week, many people took to social media to complain about the change.

“TMU means nothing to anyone in Toronto,” one person wrote on X. “Now, Sniderman station to honour Sam the Man, the real destination at that stop would have been ok.”

“If they’re renaming Dundas Station, why would they rename it TMU station when College St is right next to it? Why not Eaton Centre station?” another person wrote.

“A really dumb idea,” one other person wrote on X. “Most people in Toronto have no idea what TMU is or still (call) it Ryerson. It’ll be confusing for tourists also. At least call it Dundas-TMU Station.”

“Man. TMU is such a soulless name still,” one person wrote on Reddit.

One person called on upper levels of government to intervene.

“Where is Premier Ford to overrule the decision to rename Dundas Station to TMU?” the person asked.

TMU appears on new subway maps in TTC stations.

The name’s similarity to Temu, an online marketplace, concerned other people.

“Now arriving at Temu. Temu Station,” one person wrote on Reddit.

Another person pointed out that the University of Toronto should also get a station name.

“York and now TMU have a station. What about U of T. Museum gets changed to U of T station?” the person commented.
