Despite a report yesterday that younger people were among the least vaccinated people in the province, Dr. Lawrence Loh said that’s not the case in Peel.

“Bucking trends seen elsewhere, our 18 to 24-year-old residents in Peel have been incredibly enthusiastic, with 90 per cent having received a first dose and nearly 50 per cent having accessed two doses,” said Peel’s medical officer of health.

“That means, for our eligible residents aged 12 and over, we are sitting at nearly 79 per cent first-dose coverage and nearly 54 per cent second-dose coverage with a total of 1.95 million doses delivered. These collective efforts are making a difference and continuing to help keep everyone safe.”

Loh’s main focus at Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown’s weekly new conference held Wednesday was continued urging to get both first and second COVID-19 vaccines.

“Getting everyone to two shots of vaccine will make Peel one of the most protected communities in the world and allow us to move forward, together, with confidence.”

There are plenty of opportunities for local residents to continue to get their vaccines. Loh said the region has tens of thousands available vaccination appointments available. Also, clinics at Save Max Sports Centre and Paramount Fine Foods were both taking walk-ins from 5 to 9 p.m. today.

“The vaccines are safe and effective and even one dose protects against hospitalization and death. If it has been 28 days since your first dose, I urge you to move up the date for your second dose today to fully protect against the Delta variant.”

Since May, in Ontario, more than 83% of the people who required hospitalization were unvaccinated.

“We’re still finalizing some of our numbers in Peel,” said Loh, “but I believe it’s an even higher number, above 90 per cent, of either unvaccinated or partially vaccinated people who were hospitalized.”
