Property owners could see a 2.8 per cent increase on their Region of Peel tax bills for 2023.

The proposed 2023 Region of Peel budget is out and it includes a property tax increase of 2.8 per cent to cover regional services such as policing, housing, paramedics, waste management, public health, transportation and more.

This could add an extra $144 to the typical homeowner’s tax bill, according to the Region of Peel. Typical is defined as a home assessed at $578,600.

Commercial/industrial property tax bills could increase by $255 for a small business valued at $641,900.

Additionally, the average home will see an increase to their utility bill of 16 cents per day (or $58 per year), while the average commercial/industrial property will see an increase of 42 cents per day (or $152 per year), Peel adds.

The $5 billion budget includes operating costs of $3.1 billion and capital investments of $1.9 billion.

Proposed changes to services include increased spending on infrastructure — an additional annual $35 million and $456 million in capital expenses such as watermain projects, road repair and ambulances.

An additional annual $123 million is proposed to support child care in Peel, including support for the plan to transition to $10-a-day child care.

Housing projects, such as adding 100 affordable rental housing units, will cost an additional $169 million.

Peel Regional Police are also requesting a budget increase of $19.9 million to hire 70 police officers and 50 civilian professionals, including 18 special constables, 10 9-1-1 communicators, and four scenes of crime specialists.

The region is proposing an additional annual $0.3 million and $40 million in capital investments to deal with the impacts of the climate emergency.

And there is $10 million proposed to help maintain seniors’ long-term care homes.

Budget presentations start on Jan. 19 and continue on Jan. 26 and Feb. 2.

The Regional Council Budget meetings are open to the public and residents may attend at 10 Peel Centre Dr. The meetings are also live-streamed.
