Peel Public Health Warning of Possible Measles Exposure

A second case of measles has been confirmed in Peel Region this week.
According to Peel Public Health, anyone who was on Air Canada flight 879 which departed Zurich at 6:25 a.m. and arrived at Toronto Pearson International Airport at 10:27 a.m. on Feb. 12 may have been exposed to measles.
The Region says that no other flights or travellers at Pearson are at risk.
Measles is highly contagious, especially to those who aren’t immune or are vulnerable.
“Infants under one year of age, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems who were on flight 879 are asked to call Peel Public Health at 905-799-7700 immediately.”
All other passengers on flight 879 should do the following:

- Check your immunization records to make sure you and your children have had two doses of the measles vaccine (MMR or MMRV). Your child’s immunization record (yellow card) or your doctor can provide this information. Two doses of measles vaccine are recommended for anyone born after 1969.
- Watch for symptoms of measles for 21 days after exposure. These include a high fever; cold-like symptoms (cough/runny nose); sore eyes or sensitivity to light; small spots with a white centre on the inside of the mouth; and a red rash lasting four to seven days.

“International travellers should always check their immunization status with their doctor prior to travel.”
