Officers with Peel Regional Police have been cleared quickly after an incident where a man they were intending to question climbed out of a Brampton motel room window and was seriously injured.

Per the Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU), on May 30 officers went to a Motel 6 in Brampton. They were investigating a stolen vehicle that was in the motel parking lot and associated to a particular room. They knocked on the room’s door and announced “police,” but the 47-year-old tried to flee by scaling down the exterior of the window.

The man fell and suffered a fractured spine and left ankle. The SIU is mandated to investigate whenever a person is injured during an interaction with police.

The SIU said that Director Joseph Martino reviewed video footage from the incident before deciding to close the file.

“it was apparent the officers did not contribute to the man’s injuries in any manner that could attract criminal sanction,” the SIU says.
