Peel getting nearly $6 million in funding to help vulnerable residents during COVID-19

The Region of Peel is getting a hefty amount of funding from the provincial government in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

On March 23, the province announced that it would be providing $200 million in social services relief funding to help protect the health and safety of Ontario’s most vulnerable people.

Of that total amount, $5,988,400 is going to Peel Region.

While the Region still has to determine how the funding will be distributed, it may be used by local social service providers, including homeless shelters, food banks, emergency services, charities, and non-profits, to support:

  • delivery of critical services
  • hiring additional staff
  • acquiring more personal protective equipment
  • finding new ways to promote physical distancing to keep people safe and healthy

“As the COVID-19 crisis continues to develop, no one should have to worry about providing for themselves and their families,” said Rudy Cuzzetto, MPP for Mississauga-Lakeshore.

“Our local community organizations are on the front lines of our emergency response throughout the Region of Peel, providing support to those who need it most. This funding will help them cope with growing demands under unprecedented and extraordinary circumstances.”

Additionally, the province is providing $148 million to local service managers and Indigenous program administrators across Ontario to help them meet their local needs, such as granting emergency loans for people having a hard time paying rent.

The use for this funding will be left up to each community.

“It’s encouraging to see such leadership from the Government of Ontario, led by the Premier and supported by the work of Ministers Steve Clark, Christine Elliot, and Sylvia Jones, as well as our local MPPs,” said Nando Iannicca, Chair of the Regional Municipality of Peel. “Together, we’re ensuring much-needed services reach the most vulnerable in our community in this challenging time – doing everything possible to keep everyone safe and well.”
