Using the phrase that “it takes a village” as inspiration, staff of the Peel Regional Police recently donated two two industrial-sized bins full of clothing and footwear to an organization that helps members of Brampton’s vulnerable community.
The Divisional Mobilization Unit, a relatively recent addition to the police that focusses on community engagement, not enforcement, was the driving force behind the collection.
“The unit gathered donations from all the different divisions,” said Lori Murphy, media relations officer for the police. “We had 15 backpacks full of stuff just from headquarters.”
The good were donated to Regeneration Outreach Community, an organization that works with the homeless, those at risk of homelessness and those living in extreme poverty.
“We are so grateful for donations like this. In times like these. Agentleman will walk in and say, ‘I have no shoes’ or ‘I have no backpack’ and with this we can put shoes on someone’s feet and give someone a backpack who needs it,” said Daniel Gibson, director of community engagement at Regeneration. “If you have been camping or been outside for any period of time you realize how important something like a backpack can be. It can really change someone’s life in a meaningful way. So every donation like this just goes to help us to help people who have immediate needs.”
The police service will continue its campaign throughout the spring, with other Brampton organizations like SHIP (Services and Housing in the Province), Wilkinson Shelter, and the A. Grenville and William Davis Courthouse recipients of their donations.
