Peel cop ‘observed breaking into a school in Toronto’ one of 16 misconduct cases against Mississauga, Brampton officers

Peel police officers lost pay, rank and even their job for a wide variety of misconduct cases in 2021.

The Peel Police Services Board say they resolved 16 cases of misconduct in 2021, according to the board’s 2021 Corporate Risk Management Annual Public Report.

Misconduct is any violation of the code of conduct set out in the Police Services Act of Ontario and includes discreditable conduct, deceit, unlawful or unnecessary exercise of authority, and consuming drugs or alcohol while on duty.

The misconduct cases resolved in 2021, 16, is much higher than in previous years. In 2020, only seven cases came up, and in 2019 there were only five.

The cases in 2021 include four cases of impaired driving, a school break-in, sexual misconduct and fraud. The details in the report are minimal.

Here are the 16 cases and discipline taken:

  • An officer who “was observed breaking into a school in Toronto while on duty” got a demotion from first class constable to second class constable for at least six months.
  • A detective found guilty of sexual misconduct while duty and was knocked down to constable for at least 16 months.
  • An officer who made false medical benefit claims lost their job in April 2021.
  • An officer found guilty in a “Sunlife fraud” got demoted from first class constable to second class for at least two years.
  • A sergeant was found guilty of “inappropriate conduct while at a youth baseball tournament and “six counts of neglect of duty for theft of narcotics and currency while assigned to the robbery unit.” The sergeant was demoted to constable for at least two years.
  • An officer who made “inappropriate actions during the recruiting process” lost 15 days pay.
  • An officer found guilty of “unlawfully in dwelling” got a reduction in rank and sent to a partner response training program.
  • An officer who had a person’s vehicle “damaged and towed” lost 10 days pay.
  • An officer found guilty of impaired and careless driving had their rank reduced from first class to second class constable for at least nine months.
  • Another officer found guilty of impaired driving had their rank reduced from first class constable to second class.
  • And still one more case of impaired driving got an officer reduced in rank for at least nine months.
  • A fourth case of impaired driving got a detective demoted to first class constable for at least nine months.
  • A case of an unlawful arrest got sent an officer to anger management training along with the forfeiture of 20 eight-hour work days.
  • An officer who attempted to assist a loss prevention officer with gaining employment lost five days pay.
  • Found guilty of neglect of duty regarding a fraud report, got an officer was demoted from a first class constable to a second class constable for at least 16 months.
  • An officer found guilty of counts of “inappropriate behaviour” got demoted from first class constable to second class.
