Peel clarifies confusion after letter indicates Mississauga and Brampton students could return to school

The region is clarifying some potential confusion after a recent letter from Peel Public Health (PPH) indicated that schools in Mississauga and Brampton could reopen sooner than expected.
In a letter addressed to parents and caregivers on Thursday, April 29, Public Health recommended a number of COVID-19 health guidelines to be followed in the event that students were able to return to classrooms.
“As your children may be returning to in-person learning, we would like to provide some reminders and new information on how you can keep your children, family, and school community safe,” said Public Health.
The guidelines include daily screening for COVID-19 symptoms or exposure, wearing a mask, testing, and advising that residents who are eligible for the vaccine get the first one that is available.
On Friday, April 30, Peel Region clarified that the letter was intended for parents with special education children only.
In-person learning for special needs students is still being conducted at several locations.

“We have not received direction from the Ministry on a date for return to in-person learning for other students but will update you if we do,” said the region.
Public Health says it’s continuing to work closely with local schools and school boards to implement appropriate health and safety measures.
“This is a very challenging time and we are all trying to remain vigilant in the face of a long pandemic response effort. However, we cannot stop the spread of COVID-19 without your ongoing effort and support,” said PPH.
“Thank you for your continuous cooperation and for all that you do for your children and our community.”
