The Pedal for Hope initiative rolls out today with police officers from Durham, Peterborough, Port Hope and the OPP visiting schools all week in support of children fighting cancer.

The ‘Cycling Tour,’ which may involve the shaving of heads and pony tail cuts to raise money for charity, will see officers, in partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society, the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, the Durham District School Board and the PVNCC District School Board, talking with students at school assemblies about the Cops for Cancer initiative, which has raised more than $5.5 million in the last 18 years.

The Pedal for Hope tour started in 2005 when officers from Peterborough Police formed a cycling team and attended local schools to talk about the charity and assist with fundraising.  The ‘cycling tour’ now includes members of Durham Regional Police, as well as officers from Peterborough, Port Hope, several OPP detachments, Metrolinx and the RCMP.

All funds raised will be donated to the Pediatric Family Counselling Services through the Canadian Cancer Society for pediatric research.  Since 2005 the Pedal for Hope team has done more than 500 school presentations for more than 200,000 students
