All but two public beaches in Durham are open and safe for swimming this week.

This comes after July’s prolonged heat wave had its expected result with rising e-coli numbers forcing the posting of ten of Durham’s 14 public beaches as closed.

Throughout the summer, Durham Region Health Department tests waters at public beaches as part of its beach monitoring program. This week’s beach report also includes testing results at Durham Region’s newest beach, Iroquois Beach in Whitby.

As per the request of the Township of Uxbridge, the Health Department is no longer sampling Elgin Pond. Tests carried out at all Durham Region beaches include testing water samples for high levels of bacteria to let beach visitors know which beaches are safe for swimming.
