Over $1 million to help revitalize almost 200 year old monument in Ontario

Over $1 million is being put aside to restore a famous monument in Ontario.

A release today by Parks Canada revealed that the funds — exactly $1.1 million — are set to rejuvenate Brock’s Monument, a major structure in the Queenston Heights National Historic Site in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Constructed in 1853, the monument has been a major visual marvel of the Niagara Escarpment, commemorating the 1812 Battle of Queenston Heights, where invading American troops were repelled by Sir Isaac Brock, who lost his life in the skirmish.

“An iconic part of Queenston Heights National Historic Site, Brock’s Monument stands as a powerful tribute to Major-General Sir Isaac Brock and the sacrifices made during the War of 1812. This restoration will ensure future generations can continue to learn from and be inspired by this historic site, said Chris Bittle, Member of Parliament for St. Catharines, in an official statement.

The call to invest in the monument was made after an initial assessment by Parks Canada.

During which, it was determined that the almost two-century-old monument needed a major facelift, as deteriorated mortar joints were found, citing a risk to public health and safety.

Brock’s Monument dials in at 56 metres in height, and according to Parks Canada, it is one of the largest monuments of its kind in the country.

Rehabilitation efforts are anticipated to start this month and are expected to be completed by 2026.
