Outdoor rink proposal for Oshawa on ice for this season

The hope of getting a fully refrigerated outdoor rink in Oshawa this season has likely gone cold but the idea of building the rink adjacent to an existing arena is still very much alive in the hearts of council.

They just need to find a suitable location and possibly a willing private partner.

Delpark Homes Arena in the north end was thought to be the front-runner but the existing ice plant is not able to support an additional ice surface.

Plan B was Donevan Recreation Complex in the east end, but the proposal would “considerably reduce” available parking.

In the end Council sent staff back for further study, but with a new mandate.

  • Canvass the public through the use of an online survey to gauge an appetite for a seasonal, refrigerated outdoor rink attached to an existing recreational center and report back in 2022;
  • Research and canvass corporate sponsorship;
  • Canvass private rink facilities in Oshawa to inquire about a potential partnership.

The next update will be in 2022.
