Outdoor recess is now cancelled at elementary schools due to the air quality in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon.

Late on June 6, the Peel District School Board announced outdoor sports and strenuous activities for yesterday (June 7) and today due to the poor air quality.

Much of southern Ontario has been under a special air quality statement from Environment Canada for three days.

The board is now also cancelling outdoor recess today (June 8) and Friday for elementary school students, a statement from the board reads.

While outdoor breaks may continue for secondary school students – students are encouraged to avoid strenuous activity and schools will make every attempt to accommodate those who wish to stay inside or are experiencing symptoms such as coughing or throat irritation, the statement continues.

Outdoor activities, including scheduled athletic events and outdoor excursions, are also cancelled today and Friday.

The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board also updated its notice on the air quality.

Due to anticipated challenges with air quality, all outdoor athletic activities are cancelled for the remainder of the week and moved indoors or rescheduled where possible, the board said in a notice yesterday (June 7).

Also, out of an abundance of caution, recess will be held indoors today (June 8) for elementary students, the board said.

The board will monitor conditions for the remainder of the week and provide updates as appropriate.

However, field trips will continue.

“Staff will monitor students and provide accommodations for students who are exhibiting discomfort,” the statement reads. “As always, student participation in field trips remains a family decision.”

And planned ROPSSAA and OFSAA level athletic events for secondary schools were not cancelled and are going ahead with the scheduled events across the various jurisdictions, the notice says.

Participation is a family decision.
