Outbreak at Hillsdale Estates in Oshawa has spread to 20 people; 14 of them staff

An outbreak in a long-term care home in Oshawa that lost eight residents to the COVID-19 virus in the fall has spread to 20 people: two-thirds of them staff.
The month-long outbreak last year was during the Delta wave, so that fact and the number of people this time who have tested positive (14) that are staff gives families some hope this outbreak won’t turn tragic.
The outbreak was first declared December 27.
There are 36 outbreaks in total at long-term care homes and retirement residences in Durham, with 100 people now isolating. That number doesn’t count outbreaks at nine facilities where staff and patients with the virus are not Durham residents.
Other large outbreaks are at Glen Hill Strathaven (15), Hillsdale Terraces (12), Port Perry Place (9), Westney Gardens (7), Lakeridge Health Ajax (7) and Wynfield long-term care home-Chartwell (5).
Region-wide there were 797 new cases of the virus, though because of new protocols that number is substantially underrepresented. Ajax (213) and Oshawa (211) reported the highest number of new cases.

The active case count stands at 8,174.
There are just two outbreaks reported in childcare centres, though cohort-based dismissals will no longer occur in schools and day cares “until further notice,” according to a new directive from Durham’s Chief Medical Officer of Health.
There are also five workplace outbreaks.
