Oshawa Tourism says ‘Skip the Apps’ to support local restaurants

Oshawa Tourism is encouraging residents to dine in or pick up take-out orders throughout February and March with the ‘Skip the Apps’ campaign.

Delivery apps have enabled a society where access to almost everything is right at your fingertips, said Krista Licsi, the Tourism Lead with the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce. “Unfortunately for local culinary operators, the uprise in delivery app usage has resulted in a dramatic decrease in revenue for local restaurants, with their profit margins taking a hit of up to 30 per cent.”

During the pandemic, many local operators implemented online ordering directly from their websites, making it easier to go direct, she said.

“Skipping the apps during February and March is a great way to support local culinary operators. Dining in or ordering directly from the restaurant and picking up your order will help protect the profit margins of local restaurants and keep money within our communities, helping create jobs and stimulate economic growth.” Licsi noted, adding that it’s “a fun way” to explore and enjoy the diverse cuisines the Oshawa restaurant community has to offer.

The Skip the Apps campaign will run from February 1 to March 31 on the Oshawa Tourism social media channels and will showcase a variety of local restaurants.
