Oshawa smashes old building permit record by nearly $300 million in 2022

Oshawa had been tracking for a record year in construction for months and ended 2022 by smashing the old record for building permit value by nearly $300 million.
The city’s previous building permit record was set in 2017 at $614 million. Last year Oshawa shattered that mark, issuing more than $900 million in building permit values.
In total Oshawa set 25 new building records in 2022, including:
- highest total construction value issued in any one year ($901+ million)
- highest total residential construction value issued in any one year ($762+ million)
- 12 new industrial and commercial buildings
“This incredible year of construction reflects a rapid pace of investment and economic growth across the great City of Oshawa,” said Mayor Dan Carter. “We’ve seen billions of dollars invested in recent years and thousands of new jobs created from major international companies which is further positioning Oshawa as one of the best places to live, learn, work and invest.”
New buildings issued in 2022 include RioCan’s development at Simcoe Street North and Britannia Avenue; new industrial buildings across the city; and two new apartment buildings.
Oshawa has thrived through a remarkable run of development activity in recent years. From 2018-2022, the City issued more than $250 million in job-producing industrial building permits and more than $2.7 billion in total building permit values over the same period.

Councillor Tito-Dante Marimpietri, Chair of the Economic and Development Services Committee, said with nearly a billion dollars in building permits issued the city is experiencing growth not seen in generations.
“Prestige employment lands – such as Northwood Business Park with the projection of thousands of new jobs – are bringing unprecedented momentum to Oshawa as an economically diverse and thriving employment hub within the GTA; one that blue chip companies and AAA industrial tenants are being attracted to in a way not seen since the Industrial Revolution.”
Looking towards Oshawa’s economic future, the Northwood Business Park presents the city’s next prime employment development opportunity. Approximately 202 hectares (500 acres) of developable land designated for employment and commercial uses are attracting further investment in proximity to post-secondary institutions and the Oshawa airport.
“We are well poised for this growth and we continue to build for the future,” said Councillor Bob Chapman, Vice-Chair of the Economic and Development Services Committee.
Oshawa has kept monthly building records since 1965, while yearly records date back to 1964.
