Oshawa seeks new members for diversity, equity and inclusion committee

The City of Oshawa extended its deadline in the search for new members for the Community Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee.

The committee started in 2020 as a way to ensure the city and its programs are accessible to everyone. The deadline to apply is now July 20.

Committee members are volunteers and advise on the elimination of barriers within city programs, services and policies for diverse populations of our community, and consult on the development of new initiatives and programs. Committee members bring their knowledge, and lived experience and help build a stronger and more inclusive city.

In recent meetings, the committee discussed the city’s new Indigenous Relations Coordinator position, community events, and how to recruit new members.

The committee should have between 12 and 15 members and meets four to six times a year. Currently, there are 10 members listed online.

Members must live in Oshawa and self-identify from the following groups:

  • Indigenous Peoples
  • Faith-based groups
  • LGBTQ2S
  • Newcomers, new Canadians
  • Persons living in poverty
  • Persons with disabilities
  • Racialized people, people of diverse ethnic or cultural origin
  • Seniors
  • Women
  • Youth

Committee members bring experience in: anti-racism practices, anti-violence advocacy, anti-oppression strategies, poverty reduction, and disability advocacy, conflict resolution, trauma-informed and harm reduction practices.
