The death of a man in Oshawa shortly after police attended his home for a wellness check is now under investigation by the provincial police watchdog.

Durham Regional Police officers responded to an apartment building on Simcoe St. around 6 a.m. on March 3, according to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) which investigates death or injuries following Ontario police interactions.

The SIU said the officers were there to conduct a wellness check on the man. After speaking with him, the officer soon left the area.

The man’s body was later found outside the apartment. An autopsy has since been performed. However, the SIU has not specified the cause of death.

Anyone with information pertinent to the investigation can call the SIU at 1-800-787-8529.
