Oshawa-made Silverados subject of class action lawsuit for transmission issues

A class action lawsuit has been filed in Canada against General Motors for issues relating to the 8L eight-speed transmission found in 13 different vehicles manufactured between 2015 and the present, including the Oshawa-made Chevrolet Silverado.
The lawsuit follows a similar suit filed last year in the U.S.
According to a report from carcomplaints.com, the Hydramatic 8L90 and 8L45 transmissions are defective. The U.S. lawsuit alleges that harsh shifting properties of the transmissions can cause the vehicles to “hesitate, jerk, surge and lurch,” leading to safety issues.
While many GM vehicles have replaced the eight-speed transmission with the newer GM 10-speed (co-developed with Ford), certain models like the Camaro, Colorado and Silverado still use this transmission on several models.
Vehicles named in the suit include Silverados manufactured between 2015-2023, as well as Chevrolet Camaros – which left Oshawa Assembly in 2015 – built from 2016 on, and GMC Sierras (also formerly built in Oshawa) made from 2015-2019.
Oshawa used to produce Cadillac XTS models (2013-2019), but it was four other Cadillacs – the ATS-V, CTS-V, CT6 and Escalade – that were flagged in the report.

Other vehicles cited for transmission issues were the Chevrolet Colorado (2015-2019) and Express (2017-20123); as well as the GMC Yukon (2016-2017) and Canyon (2015-2019).
The GM Canada transmission class action lawsuit was filed in the Court of King’s Bench for Saskatchewan: Haley Tessier v. General Motors Company and General Motors of Canada.
