Oshawa looking to add outdoor skating rink to south end

After the success of an outdoor rink pilot project at Delpark Communities Centre in north Oshawa last winter, the City has pledged their support for a second naturally-frozen rink in the south end, this one at Stone Street Park.
Or, as Ward 5 Regionally Councillor Brian Nicholson put it, “the good news keeps rolling in for southern Oshawa.”
The Community Services Committee recommended to Council Monday that a new outdoor skating rink be located at the Stone Street Park tennis courts, to run from December to March (weather permitting).
The bonus benefit of the rink is it will hopefully stop people from skating at Pumphouse Marsh on nearby Lake Ontario, causing damage to plants and wildlife and to the surrounding greenspace from parked cars.
“With the existing parking and lighting at the park, this will allow residents to enjoy skating without any negative impacts on the neighbouring streets or on the sensitive wildlife area at the Pumphouse Marsh.”
The 50-foot x 100-foot rink will be open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and used mostly for leisure skating with allotted time for shinny, as was done at Delpark Community Centre last winter.

If approved by Council, $50,700 will be budgeted for the rink’s construction (to be funded through 2022 operations reserve), which includes water service near the tennis court, materials and equipment. As well, the operating budget will be hiked $36,500 to cover maintenance costs, though sponsorship revenues may be able to recover a portion of those costs.
