Oshawa gives green light for temporary cricket field at Stone Street Park

Oshawa Council has re-considered a motion from 16 years ago to ban recreational sport usage from Stone Street Park to allow a temporary cricket pitch to be built at the lakefront park.

The 40×50-metre field will be open by summer, council was told, and will be in place until a permanent field is constructed in the future.

The permanent pitch will be built in north Oshawa when a suitable location becomes available; likely at the future community centre scheduled to be constructed inn the next five years or so at Thornton Road and Britannia Road. Mayor Dan Carter pointed out, however, that the next Council and the next Mayor will decide when and where it will be built.

Cricket players rent indoor fields at the Civic Complex right now to play the game, which is especially popular with immigrants from India and south-east Asia.

The motion carried unanimously, with several councillors – including Rosemary McConkey (“You’ve made a lot of people very happy”) and Tito-Dante Marimpietri (“It will be a really nice addition to the community”) speaking in favour of the motion.
