Oshawa Generals trade overager Jesus to Niagara for draft picks

The Oshawa Generals stockpiled some draft picks – possibly with an eye on bidding for the 2024 Memorial Cup – when they traded overage defenceman David Jesus to the Niagara Ice Dogs Thursday.
The 6’4” rearguard – a popular General since he arrived here in 2018 and an assistant captain last season for the team, was dealt to the Ice Dogs for a third round pick next year and a fifth round selection in 2025. The picks aren’t likely to acquire impact players but may be useful in a package deal, should the team decide to take a run in two years.
Jesus played in 125 games for Oshawa, tallying six goals and 27 assists. During his time as a General, he earned an invite from the Arizona Coyotes to join their rookie camp in 2021. Jesus also made his pro-hockey debut during the 2020-2021 season joining Liptovsky Mikulas of the Slovak Extraliga.
In other Generals’ news, Calum Ritchie, who is expected to play a huge role next year and especially in 2023-24, was named to the OHL’s first team all-Rookie team. Ritchie, who scored 19 goals and added 26 assists for 45 points, was also invited to Canada’s U18 camp for the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup, being held in Red Deer from July 31 to August 6.
Ritchie had previously represented Hockey Canada at the Capital City Challenge in 2021 as a replacement tournament for the cancelled U17 World Hockey Challenge. Ritchie scored the overtime winner as Team Black won gold with a 5-4 win over Team Red. Ritchie finished the tournament with five goals and six assists, finishing second in tournament scoring with 11 points in five games.
“Being invited to this U18 camp and to be given the opportunity to compete for a spot to represent Canada means absolutely everything to me,” said Ritchie. “It will be a great experience no matter what happens and I’m really excited to put in the work.”
