The race for the last playoff spot in the OHL’s Eastern Conference will go down to the wire after Oshawa Generals saw their chance to clinch Wednesday night disappear in a 6-2 loss the Frontenacs at the Leons Centre in Kingston.

Birthday boy Ethan Miedema scored four goals – a wicked slapper by rookie defenceman Ben Danford 35 seconds into the second was the only early response by Oshawa as Kingston raced out to a 5-1 lead – as the Frontenacs kept their playoff hopes alive for another day.

Kingston is now just one point back of Oshawa with two games left to play for both clubs.

Miedema, who was celebrating his 18th birthday, chased starter Jacob Oster in the third period with his fourth of the night. The two teams traded goals after that, with Beckett Sennecke – another Oshawa rookie – scoring on a nice deke-and-shoot before the Frontenacs iced it with an empty net goal.

Oshawa hosts Mississauga at home Friday night while Kingston is home to Barrie. An Oshawa win and a Kingston loss would give the Generals the eighth seed (and a date with OHL #1 seed Ottawa). Otherwise it will be a winner-take-all match between Oshawa and Kingston Sunday at the Tribute Communities Centre.

Singles and standing room tickets are all that remain for Sunday’s game.
