For three of the five games in the Oshawa Generals’ first round playoff series with the #1 ranked Ottawa 67s the team gave as good as it got.

The other two games – a 7-0 loss in game one and an 9-0 smackdown in game four – were forgettable and ultimately, superior talent wins out, with Saturday night’s 4-2 loss in Gatineau, Quebec spelling the end of their season.

Oshawa wasn’t going out without a fight and controlled most of the possession in the first two periods. Calum Ritchie gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the first and after Logan Morrison scored twice – give him seven for the series – Ryan Gagnier tied the game at 2s midway through the second.

Luca Pinelli – the OHL Player of the Week – scored the game and series winner two minutes later and Ottawa locked it down in the third, icing it with an empty-netter with seven seconds remaining.

Oshawa brought their A-game to game two (a 3-2 loss) and three (a 5-4 win in front of a home crowd, with Gagnier supplying the heroics) but it was not enough against an Ottawa squad that has been the best team in the OHL all season long.

Oshawa, which will say goodbye to several of their ageing-out stars – including Gagnier – will have exit meetings this week while management prepares for next season. Ottawa, finally back in their home rink at TD Place Arena, gets ready to host Peterborough in the second round.
