Oshawa Generals celebrating ‘Pride Night’ Friday at the TCC

One team. One message. One love.

That’s the message from the Oshawa Generals Hockey Club as they celebrate Pride Night Friday with “full support” from the entire organization. The players will be sporting specially designed pride jerseys for the game against Peterborough with the game-worn jerseys to be auctioned off, with all proceeds going towards PFLAG Canada, Durham Region.

The Generals began celebrating “those in our communities and sport who were forgotten about and ignored for so long” and last season elevated their efforts to make the LGBTQIA+ community feel more included through a Pride Night logo, helmet decals, and an Oshawa Generals x Pride t-shirt, leading to more than $2,000 donated to PFLAG Durham.

This year’s t-shirts are available in the Oshawa Generals store for $20, with the design featuring a Generals helmet, alongside the other helmets coloured to match that of the pride flag. The design is meant to illustrate the intersectionality that already exists between the LGBTQIA+ community and the sport of hockey.

All proceeds from the 2023 Oshawa Generals x Pride shirt will be donated to PFLAG Durham for a second consecutive season.

Friday’s guest of honour will be Farra N Hyte, a legend in the Toronto and Canadian Drag scene and a Whitby resident. Farra N Hyte has been a judge on the Canadian Drag reality television show ‘Call Me Mother’ for all three seasons of the show and was named by Post magazine as one of “Toronto’s Most Inspiring Women of 2021.”

The club is also introducing this season’s ‘Pride Project,’ which will include personal stories and messages about why celebrating Pride is important not only as individuals but also as an organization within the sport of hockey. Messages from those from around Oshawa, the sport, and the LGTBQIA+ community will be shown on the video board and the team’s social media channels throughout the game.
