Oshawa double stabbing now a murder investigation after one victim dies in hospital

A stabbing incident at the northern edge of Oshawa’s downtown Sunday morning is now a murder investigation after one of the two victims died in hospital.

Officers from Durham Regional Police East Division responded to reports of an armed person near Simcoe Street and Adelaide Avenue about 4 a.m. Sunday morning and found two adult women suffering from stab wounds.

The women were quickly transported to a Toronto trauma centre. Both victims were listed in critical condition.

Katie Kainz, 26, died Tuesday morning, the sixth homicide victim in Durham Region in 2023.  The condition of the second victim is now considered stable.

No suspect information is available and police say it appears to be an isolated incident.

Investigators are asking for anyone with information or video footage, including dashcam and home surveillance, to contact police.
