Whitby residents – and those in eastern Ajax as well – will have better access to health care in 2024 with the expansion of the Oshawa Clinic Group to Whitby.

Dignitaries were on hand last Friday to break ground for the four-storey, state-of-the-art medical facility, which will be built at the southwest corner of Des Newman Boulevard and Bonacord Avenue in West Whitby – an area anticipated to be one of Durham Region’s fastest areas of growth over the next 11 years.

The Whitby Health Centre’s central location will enable the 85 physicians (including both specialists and family physicians) who will provide care through the facility to better serve patients from across the region.

The clinic, at 154,000 square feet, is being billed as the largest private multidisciplinary medical group practice in Canada. Residents will have access to a range of non-acute healthcare services, including cardiology, physiotherapy, fertility, men’s health, audiology and psychology.

The clinic will also feature a walk-in urgent care centre.

“As our Town continues to grow, it is important that our residents have convenient access to a wide range of health care services close to home,” enthused Whitby Mayor Don Mitchell. “We are pleased to see the clinic break ground in our town and look forward to the facility’s opening in 2024.”

This is the fourth medical facility for the Oshawa Clinic Group. Besides the original location in downtown Oshawa that can trace its history to 1927, there is the Courtice Health Centre to the east and the Taunton Health Centre/Surgical Centre in the north, adjacent to the Oshawa Airport.

Jeff Warford, the Group’s CEO, said his team was “excited” to break ground on the new facility, which is expected to employ 350 people.

“This new modern medical facility will enable us to provide expanded healthcare services to patients across Durham Region for many years.”
