COVID-19 numbers in Durham Region exploded yesterday with 53 new cases reported, nearly tripling Tuesday’s new case load of 20.

Outbreaks in Oshawa (17), Clarington (13) and Whitby (12) fueled the dramatic increase as fears of a fourth wave in the region start to grow.

There are nine people currently in hospital and three in ICU.

It is unclear how many of the new cases are of the Delta variant, but there were 275 reported cases of the variant on Tuesday and Wednesday reveals that number has shot up to 307.

It is also unclear how many of the new cases are from unvaccinated residents. Ontario releases those numbers; Durham’s Health Department does not.
