The upcoming Peony Festival is just one of many initiatives the City of Oshawa has committed to this year as the city celebrates 2022 as the Year of the Garden.

This year, Communities in Bloom and ‘Fleurons du Quebec’ in collaboration with the Canadian Garden Council, invited municipalities across Canada to celebrate the Year of the Garden 2022, a Centennial Celebration of Canada’s horticulture sector.

The celebration honours the contribution of gardens and gardening to the development of Oshawa and to the lives of residents.

“As a Garden-Friendly City for all, we are proud of our breathtaking City gardens, prize-winning Peony Festival and the many talented home gardeners and gardening groups who have helped make Oshawa beautiful,” said Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter. “As we recognize the contribution gardens and gardening have made to our community, I encourage everyone to spend some time enjoying the many feature gardens and floral displays across our city.”

Oshawa City Council approved the proclamation on April 25, based on a request from the Oshawa Garden Club recognizing the contribution of gardeners, local gardening organizations and the local horticultural industry in helping to improve quality of life in Oshawa by contributing to the City’s climate action goals and creating safe, healthy and inclusive community spaces.

The City Council proclamation also acknowledges the importance of gardens and gardening in helping community members overcome the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the great community pride in personal and public gardens in Oshawa, including the award-winning 18th annual Peony Festival and the Adopt-a-Giving Garden Program at City Hall.
