Oshawa has asked the Region of Durham to appear before their Development Services Committee to explain what’s going on with the proposed anaerobic digestion facility in the neighbouring community of Courtice.

The request is the end result of a notice of motion filed by Oshawa Councillor John Gray to support the Municipality of Clarington’s demand for an Environmental Assessment into the controversial facility, citing possible odours and other environmental concerns that would affect residents in southern and eastern Oshawa.

Clarington and Durham Region had been involved in a mediation process to try and resolve their differences over the proposed facility until Durham abruptly terminated the process in early December because of Clarington’s “delays, lack of engagement and activity in the media,” prompting Gray to call Durham a “bully” for its negotiation tactics.

Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter said the request for a regional representative to appear at the city’s committee and answer questions is “so we have a clear understanding of what’s going there.”
