It’s been a challenging first season in Oshawa for the National Lacrosse League’s FireWolves with wins few and far between but the club will try and make it two wins in a row when they take on the Philadelphia Wings Friday night in the home half of a back-to-back.
Both teams sit in the basement of the 14-team league at 3-10 after Oshawa squeezed by the Wings 13-12 in Philadelphia on Sunday.
A win by Oshawa (and a season sweep of Philadelphia) will help the FireWolves vault past Calgary (idle until Saturday) and into 12th place.
Oshawa has been in many one-goal games this season that haven’t gone their way but remain – mathematically, at least – alive in the playoff race, though it would require the FireWolves winning out their five remaining games and a whole lot of help.
Alex Simmons sits fourth in league scoring despite the team’s record with 30 goals and 76 points and goalie Doug Jamieson is second in saves this season with 524.
Off the floor the team has been a huge success, with nearly every game at the Tribute Communities Centre sold out and the players very active in selling the sport and the brand in the community.
The FireWolves are also celebrating mascot Alphie’s Birthday tonight, with a win the best present any wolf could ask for.
The game at the Tribute Centre (7 p.m. start) is available to watch at home on TSN+, ESPN+, and NLL+.
