If you get a text like this, don’t fall for it.

Some local residents have recently received a text message from a sender calling itself the “OntarioParty”, which says it has issued a credit to all Ontario residents “to fight inflation.”

The text offers a link to follow for more information:

The text is a scam — despite claiming otherwise, the text is not from the Ford government or any other political group.

As with all scams like this one, residents should avoid clicking the link or replying, as even a simple reply can signal to scammers that your number is active.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, which keeps track of major scams and fraud throughout the country, advises residents to never share personal information with unverified people or groups.

That includes information such as your:

  • name
  • address
  • birth date
  • social insurance number
  • credit card or banking information
