Heritage district in Port Perry getting spruce-up

A section of Port Perry’s historic downtown will get a spruce-up this year, thanks to a $30,000 Heritage Conservation District grant from Scugog Township.

The grant was approved for up to $30,000 to support façade restoration work on the landmark commercial building at 179-191 Queen Street, originally constructed in 1884. The project will include repointing the masonry, selective brick replacement with historically appropriate materials and preservation of original architectural details, helping to maintain the building’s authentic character.

The property, formerly known as Settlement House, is a cornerstone of downtown Port Perrys busy commercial scene and is a key feature of Queen Street, designated as part of Port Perry’s Heritage Conservation District.

The 4,200 sq. ft. retail space is currently home to Panorama Furniture and Ladieswear store.

Other 2026 heritage grant recipients include Meta4 Gallery at 200 Queen Street (exterior foundation waterproofing) and Port Perry United Church at 294 Queen Street (restoration of heritage features).

The restoration projects will also address structural concerns, including loose and deteriorating bricks caused by weathering and freeze-thaw cycles. Completing the work will help stabilize the building and maintain public safety, while preserving a key piece of Scugog’s architectural heritage.

Work is expected to be completed in 2026, with efforts made to minimize disruption during the peak summer tourism season. All property owners in the Downtown Port Perry Heritage Conservation District are eligible to apply for a Heritage Conservation District Grant.
