Ontario is reporting 13,578 new cases of COVID-19 today., including 795 in Mississauga and 695 in Brampton.

Public Health Ontario says the number of infected people is likely higher due to recent policy changes which have made COVID−19 testing less accessible.

Hamilton is reporting 2,271 new cases over the past two days and one new death. Niagara Region is reporting 399 new cases.

Durham Region and Halton Region won’t be releasing their data until tomorrow.

Health Minister Christine Elliott says 1,232 people are hospitalized in Ontario with the virus, including 210 in intensive care, but notes that not all hospitals report on weekends.

Elliott says the seven-day rolling average of COVID-19 related patients in intensive care units is 210.

The numbers come as Premier Doug Ford announced the Province will be returning to Stage 2 of the pandemic protocols, with indoor dining, gyms and theatres closing and capacity restrictions being placed on retail establishments.

School will remain closed to in-person learning until at least January 17 under the new protocols.
