Oshawa makes the grade for top 50 friendliest Canadian cities for international students

Oshawa made the cut for 50 most international student-friendly cities in Canada list, just coming in under the wire at #47 in a survey conducted by clevercanadian.ca.
Oshawa is home to three post-secondary institutions: Ontario Tech University, with its main campus in the north end and a significant presence downtown; Durham College; and Trent University’s Trent Durham GTA campus.
The city scored high (top 5) in internet speed (175.14 Mbps) and was among the top 30-35 for monthly rent cost ($1,217). Oshawa was ranked in the top 40 in ethnic diversity (3.48 per cent) and average tuition cost ($7,366) and in the 4—45 per centile in annual percentage of graduates (22.9 per cent) and living expenses ($1,377.49).
The city was cited for its reliable transit system, affordable housing, beautiful surroundings and low crime rate. “It’s a wonderful place for students to learn,” the website said.
The top ten in the Best Canadian Cities for International Students (which was top-heavy with five communities from Quebec) was headed up by Sherbrooke, Quebec, followed by St. John’s, NFLD, Calgary, Rimouski, Quebec, Edmonton, Montreal, Quebec City, Trois-Rivieres, Winnipeg and Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec.
The final score was determined by adding up the rankings in each category for each city. Lowest score wins.
