Ontario Green Party leader talks up affordable, environmentally-friendly housing on Ajax visit

Ontario Green Leader Mike Schreiner told Ajax residents on Thursday that housing developments can be built that are both affordable and environmentally friendly.
One of Schreiner’s stops on his one-day visit to Ajax was Duffins Creek Wetland, which he fought to protect at Queen’s Park from a development spurred on by a Ministerial Zoning Order from Premier Doug Ford’s cabinet.
“We can build communities without paving over wetlands and greenspaces like Duffins Creek,” Schreiner said. “It’s about smart development and protecting the places that protect us from flooding and the impacts of the climate crisis.”
Schreiner was in town to talk up his party’s housing strategy to build livable and affordable communities and he started the day by visiting the Town of Ajax’s low-cost locker program for unsheltered residents.
“The locker program is a creative and important interim step as we work to provide more permanent housing solutions for unhoused Ontarians,” Schreiner said. “Tackling the homelessness crisis in Ontario will require innovative and bold ideas.”
Ontario Greens are committed to building 60,000 permanent supportive housing spaces with wrap-around supports to end chronic homelessness across Ontario.

Schreiner also met up with local Greens, including Green Party of Canada candidate Leigh Paulseth, to discuss local environmental and community issues.
