The Ontario government recently announced that they will be investing millions of dollars to support community-led initiatives including a project in Milton, to fight racism and hate.

The provincial government is investing a total of $3.2 million over three years to support 58 initiatives.

According to Parm Gill, Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Milton, the Ontario government is investing a total of $95,808 to fight racism and hate in the Town of Milton.

“Let’s continue to make meaningful progress to build a stronger, safer and more inclusive province,” said Gill in a Facebook post.

The investment will support the project called Exclusively Inclusive: Using Art to Rethink Us vs Them organized by Arts Milton in partnership with Red T Media and the Town of Milton.

In the first year, the two-year project will feature the work of 10 artists who have created art pieces that promote inclusion, diversity and equity. The ten pieces of artwork have been placed on ten traffic boxes around Milton. These pieces will feature QR codes that passers-by will be able to scan in order to learn more about the artists and artwork.

Artists showing in this exhibition include Allycia Uccello, Aparna Rangnekar, Désiré Betty, Hope Flynn, Jungle Ling, Katika Marczell (aka Candy Press), Nargis Naqvi, Omar Hopkinson (Oms), Poonam Sharma and Reilly Knowles.

Through two rounds of funding, Ontario’s Anti-Racism and Anti-Hate (ARAH) Grant has invested in various projects that increase public education, understanding and awareness of the impacts of racism and hate.

Additionally, earlier this month, there was a gallery opening where artists participated in a panel discussion that covered difficult topics including racism and how arts help to spread the word about inclusiveness. The gallery’s opening also showcased the artists’ traffic box art and additional artwork.
