Ontario is breaking ground on the first of three new subway stations in Toronto.

Crews have started piling work at Scarborough Centre Station, the province announced on Friday.

The new station is part of the Scarborough subway extension, which has been under construction since 2021, and is expected to be completed in 2030.

The three-station expansion of the TTC’s Line 2 subway service will extend 7.8 kilometres farther into Scarborough, from Kennedy Station to Sheppard Avenue and McCowan Road. The extension will replace Line 3, which ceased operations in November 2023.

The project is expected to cost more than $10 billion.

When complete, the Scarborough Centre Station will accommodate more than 10,000 passengers and facilitate over 7,000 transfers during rush hour, the province said.

The station will also include a new bus terminal with passenger pickup and drop-off spaces so riders can transfer between local buses and the new subway line.

Construction of the Scarborough Subway Extension is expected to keep 3,000 workers on the job each year and will bring 38,000 people within walking distance of transit once complete.

“The Scarborough Subway Extension will be a game-changer for the people of Scarborough, making it easier than ever before for commuters to get around quickly and conveniently,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. “In the face of President Trump’s tariff threats, this project will also support thousands of skilled trades workers and attract new jobs and investment here in Scarborough and around the province.”

Ontario will fund one-third of the final cost of 55 new Line 2 subway trains for the TTC as part of a single-source contract with Alstom Transport Canada Inc. In 2021, Canada committed to contributing over $2.2 billion to the construction of the Scarborough Subway Extension.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said the new line is much needed.

“People in Scarborough deserve better access to transit to get to work, school or run errands. This new station will move tens of thousands of people each day, helping them connect to subway trains on the new Scarborough Subway Extension and buses that reach every corner of our city,” Chow said. “Toronto is investing massively in fixing transit infrastructure and improving service, and with our strong provincial partnership we can serve even more people in Scarborough with reliable, convenient and safe transit.”
