Vehicle thefts are on the rise so much in Mississauga, Brampton and the rest of Ontario that recent insurance companies’ numbers show a claim was made every 37 minutes in 2021, a recent study shows.

The study, conducted by industry watchers HelloSafe, also had fair warning for anyone interested in purchasing a Lexus RX. Nearly one in 10 of that particular model made between 2016 and 2021 was favoured by professional thieves.

HelloSafe reports that theft claims registered with insurance companies soared 28.4 per cent between 2020 with roughly 11,000 stolen vehicles and 2021, which saw more than 14,000 stolen.

Of those thefts in 2021, a solid 55 per cent were SUVs, by far the most popular among thieves. Comparatively, just 28.2 per cent of stolen vehicles in Ontario were sedans. At half the number of sedans was stolen vans.

Bryan Gast, vice-president of Investigative Services of Équité Association, said that stolen vans in Ontario were being sold overseas for disturbing reasons.

“Vehicles across the country are being stolen in greater volume for export internationally by organized crime networks,” said Gast.

“The proceeds of this illegal activity are being used to fund organized crime and terrorism, both domestically and internationally.”
