Two people were seriously injured (and one person’s injuries are considered life-threatening) following a head-on collision in Whitby.
Durham police say that around 2:15 p.m. on Friday, July 17, officers were called to the scene of a crash in the Lake Ridge Road and Highway 407 area.
According to police, a Hyundai SUV was travelling southbound on Lake Ridge Road near the 407 while a Mitsubishi SUV was exiting the 407 off-ramp.
The Mitsubishi SUV appeared to enter the intersection, causing the Hyundai SUV to veer out of its lane and collide head-on with a Dodge minivan travelling northbound on Lake Ridge Road.
Police say the 24-year-old driver of the Hyundai SUV suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre, while a 77-year-old passenger who was travelling in the Dodge minivan suffered critical but non-life-threatening injuries and was also transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre.
Police say the 69-year-old driver of the Dodge minivan suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local area hospital.
Members of the DRPS Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene to conduct an investigation and the roads in the area were closed for several hours as a result.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing, and police are asking anyone with cell phone, dash cam, surveillance footage or information about this incident to contact D/Cst. Lan of the Collision Investigation Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5216.
