Two drivers are facing charges after driving past a police barricade onto a closed stretch of road in Ajax.

Officers shut down the Salem Road and Kerrison Drive intersection in Ajax after a car struck a hydro pole blacking out the area around 7 pm Tuesday night. The hydro pole was dislodged and live electrical wire dangled above the street.

Police say the officer’s barricade was well lit with emergency lights and hundreds of commuters detoured around. However, two drivers allegedly went right through.

The first, a 35-year-old man from Ajax, was watching music videos on a mounted display in the car when he drove around the barricade according to police. He is charged with driving on a closed highway and driving with a display screen visible.

While officers were dealing with the first driver, a black SUV, went around the pylons and cruisers to take the closed road. The driver, an 18-year-old woman from Ajax, was stopped by the officer working with the first driver. The officer told her to wait until he was done.

She did not, according to police. The woman allegedly drove away when the officer turned his back to continue with the first driver.

Another on-scene officer stopped the woman. She was charged with driving on a closed highway, careless driving, disobeying an officer directing traffic, failure to surrender her licence, and driving unaccompanied with a G1.

The owner of the car later arrived to collect the car and driver.
